Frequently Asked Questions
Choose a propeller
The elements that characterize the performance of a propeller are: pitch and diameter. Compared to these, all the other characteristics of the propeller largely take second place.
Between the pitch and the diameter, the most important element, which determines the level of propeller performance, is the pitch. In fact, if the diameter is changed at the same time, even significantly, the performance of the propeller does not change. On the contrary, even a small variation in the pitch, for the same diameter, generates quite sensitive effects.
Even the number of blades has an entirely secondary influence on the performance of the propeller compared to the influence of the diameter and pitch. The main, albeit modest, influences given by the number of blades on the propeller performance are essentially two:
• For particular navigation conditions, a propeller with a high, and preferably odd, number of blades is generally quieter than the same propeller with a lower number of blades.
• The optimal theoretical diameter of a propeller, referring to the same optimal three-bladed propeller, should vary as follows:
two-bladed propeller: 3% larger diameter
four-bladed propeller: 2.5% smaller diameter
five-bladed propeller: 4% smaller diameter
In order to make a true comparison between the performance of multiple propellers, it is necessary to consider only one need at a time. In fact, each user has their own needs and prefers certain performances over others, for example maximum navigation autonomy (i.e. lower fuel consumption per mile travelled), maximum navigation speed, maximum maneuvering efficiency, maximum comfort in cruising speed. cruising, etc... Each need, to be best satisfied, requires a specific pitch and it is therefore important to have a propeller that allows the pitch to be varied.
